Tethering-connecting one device to another, usually by USB connections or wireless, most often in order to share a connection to the internet. Lately it has been most often used in connecting iPads, phones and other mobile devices to the internet through another device. The FCC has ruled recently that Verizon and other 4G providers cannot charge extra for users who use their devices as WiFi hotspots, allowing other devices to tether to the internet. This strikes me as a correct ruling, since the 802.11 spectrum is not regulated, using your device as a hotspot for other devices is a perfectly legitimate and legal utilization of the spectrum.
